How difficult it seems when you’re working with a lot of Windows on your PC, and have to minimize them all to take a look at any action going on the Desktop window? A lot of people might not be aware of the trick, but you do not have to minimize all the opened windows to take a look at the Desktop screen. Instead, there are ways you can quickly jump onto the Desktop screen and then go back to your work where you left.
Below we shall discuss the ways to do the same so that you don’t lose your layout.
View Desktop using the Taskbar button
Taskbar button is present on the extreme right corner of the screen that works as a ‘Show Desktop’ button. For instance- you’re working with a lot of windows switching from one to another, and suddenly you want to go to your Desktop window. All you need to do is tap on the Taskbar button that will take you directly to the Desktop. You can resume working by clicking on the Taskbar button again to get back to the windows you were working with.
An alternate to this method is creating a shortcut with ‘Quick Launch Toolbar.’ The steps to add the ‘Show Desktop’ button to the Quick Launch are:
- Minimize all the windows if you’re working with any and go to the Desktop.
- Right-click on the Desktop and a pop-up window will appear. Click on the ‘New’ button to get to the next drop-down menu.
- From the next pop-up window, select ‘Shortcut.’
- A new window that appears, tap on the ‘Type the location of the item’ and enter the text mentioned below:
%windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{3080F90D-D7AD-11D9-BD98-0000947B0257}
- Click ‘Next’ to continue and type a name for the shortcut created.
- Finally, click on the ‘Finish’ button to save the changes.
Take a sneak peek at the Desktop using the Taskbar button
If you don’t want to jump to the Desktop window, and rather just take a peek at the screen, the steps are as follows:
- Right-click on the Taskbar button on the right corner of the screen.
- A menu with two options will appear: Show Desktop and Peek at Desktop. Click on the second option to keep it as primary, and a checkmark will appear in front of it.
The next time when you place the cursor on the Taskbar button, it’ll directly take you to the Desktop screen. If you move your cursor, the Desktop screen will disappear, and the windows you were working with earlier will open.
If you want to uncheck this option, tap on the ‘Peek at Desktop’ again to do so.
View the Desktop by right-clicking on the Taskbar
To use this method to view the Desktop, the steps are as follows:
- Place the cursor of the mouse on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, and right-click.
- A pop-up menu window will appear. Select ‘Show the Desktop.’ This will take you to the Desktop window.
- Now, if you want to get back to the working windows, right-click on the Taskbar again and select ‘Show open windows’ from the pop-up menu.
Use a Keyboard shortcut to view the Desktop
The simplest way to jump to the Desktop and then return to the windows is using the Keyboard shortcut that is ‘Windows + D.’ This too works as a switch, press the keys once, and it’ll take you to the Desktop while, if you press it again, it’ll get you back to the working windows.
