Garrone’s 2019 film Pinocchio is an Italian fantasy movie based on the 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio written by author Carlo Collodi. The film stars Federico Ielapi as Pinocchio, Gigi Proietti as Mangiafuoco, Marine Vacth as the adult Fairy with Turquoise Hair, and Roberto Benigni as Mister Geppetto. It was released on 19 December 2019 in Italy. Pinocchio collected a gross of $20.4 million against a budget of $12 million. The movie was the highest-grossing movie of the Christmas week and the sixth-grossing film of the year in Italy.

The distributors released the English-dubbed version of the film in the United Kingdom and Ireland this August. However, on 25 December, Roadside Attractions will release the movie in Canada and the United States almost after a year.

The movie received positive reviews and got fifteen nominations in the David di Donatello Awards, winning the five, including Best Makeup, Best Sets and Decorations, Best Visual Effects, Best Costumes, and Best Visual Effects. Pinocchio got an approval rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 35 reviews, with an average rating of 7.00. The critic of IndieWire, Eric Kohn, gave the film a B grade rating and wrote that it imbues its circumstances with a surprising degree of naturalism.

The novel is adapted into a film, animated series, and TV shows. However, the 1940 version of Pinocchio is a Disney animated movie considered an art of animation and a masterpiece. There are two upcoming movies based on the book; one is directed by Guillermo del Toro and the other one by Robert Zemeckis.

Del Toro’s 2021 stop-motion musical will be released on Netflix. It will be a darker story set in fascist Italy. At the same time, Zemeckis’ Pinocchio will be based on the 1940 version of the story. It will be a live-action film that stars Tom Hanks. The actor-director duo worked on many projects, including Cast Away in 2000, Forrest Gump in 1994, and The Polar Express in 2004.

Roadside Attractions released the trailer of Garrone’s Pinocchio. The trailer wonderfully captures the film's spirit that the audience connects with Pinocchio’s story when it says, “I want to become a boy like all the others.”

Garrone’s version also gives a sense of dark visual and ambiance. The film consists of some amazing visuals like Pinocchio’s nose being perked by woodpeckers, taken from the novel itself.

In between the speculation of Zemeckis and del Toro’s version of Pinocchio, Garrone managed to create his unique kind of adaptation. The trailer follows the book as a source of reference both visually and in terms of plot. The movie is also set in Italy and created by Italian artists who bring the novel’s essence to its roots.

In short, Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio will explore a rich world of mystery stars the Academy Award-winning actor Benigi as the puppet maker, Geppetto. Geppetto carved a block of wood into a boy pupper and named it Pinocchio. The puppet magically comes to life and dreams of becoming a real boy. The whole movie follows the wooden boy through his misadventures.
