How to Make Your Mac Boot Faster

Mac is indeed a gadget with a lot of functions and a perfect graphic-user interface. Sometimes it can create issues that need to be fixed immediately. For instance, if your Mac takes a long time to move from the Welcome screen to the main Home screen, it can get quite irritating. Imagine if you’re in a hurry and your Mac isn’t booting up. Here are some ways to make your Mac boot faster.

Do not shut down your Mac

A lot of people get confused with the Shut Down option and Sleep Mode. These two aren’t the same. When you turn on your Mac, it has to load all of its functions that take time to boot. While, Sleep Mode doesn’t close the processes going on your system and when you turn on your Mac, it resumes working from the point you left.

Sleep Mode works slightly differently for the desktop and laptop but doesn’t take much time to boot your Mac. To put your Mac on Sleep Mode, tap on the Apple icon, and select the ‘Sleep’ option. Not only this, but you can put your Mac on Sleep Mode by default. To do the same, click on the ‘System Preferences’ and hit the ‘Energy Saver’ option.

Keep your Mac powered while using Sleep Mode

The content on the RAM is lost when you cut the power off your Mac. Thus, it’ll take time to load the content when you restart your system. This can happen more often with the older macOS versions. To avoid such a situation, you can leave your Mac connected to power whenever you can, while you put your Mac on Sleep Mode.

Remove unnecessary applications from your Mac

Piling up too many applications on your Mac can slow down your system. Therefore, it is necessary to remove any unwanted start-up and login items from your Mac. The steps to do the same are:

  • Go to the ‘System Preferences’ window.
  • Click on the ‘Users and Groups’ tab.
  • Make sure that the current user is appropriate. If it is correct, click on the ‘Login items.’
  • A list of applications will appear. Mark the checkbox for the applications you want to remove.
  • Click on the minus icon (-) below the box to remove all the marked applications.

Maintain free space on your Mac

It is advised not to fill up all the space you have on your Mac. This is one of the reasons for a slow system. Thus, it is essential to at least keep ten percent of the space empty. Whenever your device is reaching its capacity, it starts flashing warning notifications. That’s the time you can start deleting some of the files on your Mac and free up space.

Disable ‘Reopen windows’ while shutting down

‘Reopen windows when logging back in’ is without a doubt a useful feature, but many people can choose to disable it. This is because when you enable this option, all the tabs or the opened windows are automatically relaunched as soon as you log in. On the other hand, when you disable the feature, data is not lost.

For example- If you’re using Safari on your Mac, and you close the window while a lot of tabs were opened, the tabs will be there when you log in. The only difference is that you’ll have to manually launch Safari in case of a disabled ‘Reopen windows’ feature.

The steps to disable the ‘Reopen Windows’ feature on your Mac are:

  • Go to the ‘System Preferences’ window.
  • Click on the ‘Users and Groups’ tab.
  • Click on the ‘Login Options.’
  • Tap the padlock and enter the password to open the window and make changes.

Reinstall macOS

Reinstalling your macOS to the latest available version can be a great solution to your slow system. It is advised to create a backup for your data in case you delete something by mistake. Also, note that all the applications and software will have to be redownloaded once you reinstall your Mac.

Switch to SSD from a hard drive

If your Mac relies on the hard drive, it’s time to switch to SSD. To find out the type of drive used by your Mac, tap on the Apple icon and click on ‘About this Mac’ option. Go to the ‘Storage’ tab and locate the ‘Flash Storage’ option. In case, flash storage doesn’t appear, your Mac might be using an older drive.

In such a case, go to the ‘Overview’ tab and select ‘System Report.’ Click on the ‘SATA/SATA Express’ option and locate the ‘Medium Type.’ If it says ‘Solid State,’ your Mac is running on a mechanical drive. Thus, you can switch to SSD by installing the same.

Prioritize automatic login

Enabling the automatic login feature can help increase the speed of your Mac when you log in. The steps to enable the same are:

  • Go to the ‘System Preferences’ window.
  • Click on the ‘Users and Groups’ tab.
  • Click on the ‘Login Options.’

The option is unavailable when you use FileVault to encrypt your drive. Thus, the steps to disable the FileVault are:

–          Go to the ‘System Preferences’ window.

–          Click on the ‘Security and Privacy’ tab.

–          Tap on the ‘FileVault’ option.

–          Click on the ‘Lock’ icon on the bottom of the screen and enter admin details.

–          Next, tap on the ‘Turn off FileVault’ option.

Note: A drawback of using an automatic login feature is that it doesn’t require any password and thus, anyone can access your data.

The above eight methods will make it so much easier for you to operate your Mac without having to wait for so long.
